first_imgDEFENDING champions Calabar High School are gunning for a third straight win in the McKay Security Jamaica Taekwondo Association High School Martial Arts League this weekend when action shifts to the Jamaica Taekwondo Academy Open at Campion College.Calabar hold a 2-0 lead in the eight-match league out of the Christmas break, sweeping last year’s beaten finalists, St George’s College, at November’s Zendo Open at the University of Technology.Calabar, Kingston College, St George’s College, Jamaica College and Wolmer’s Boys’ School are participants in the league, which culminates with its stars travelling to the United States Open, the world’s biggest martial arts tournament, held annually to coincide with the July 4 holiday weekend in Orlando, Florida.Saturday’s Jamaica Taek-wondo Academy Open will be the first match of the year and third of the season, which runs parallel with the school year, which started with October’s Junior Taekwon-Do Open.Calabar captain Trevor Webb Jr said the match holds dual significance for him.”In addition to wanting the hat-trick, this is my school’s tournament, the Jamaica Taekwondo Academy, which my father heads,” he pointed out.Tye McKay, Webb Jr and Tyrique Tai-Loy led Calabar past St George’s at the Zendo Open following October’s 3-1 win at the season-opening Jamaica Taekwondo Junior Open.- Ainsley Walterslast_img read more
