first_imgAtlantic transportation ministers came together in Antigonish today, Aug. 24, to talk about a number of transportation issues of regional and national importance. Nova Scotia Transportation and Public Works Minister Angus MacIsaac welcomed ministers of transportation Gail Shea, from Prince Edward Island, and John Hickey, from Newfoundland and Labrador, and senior officials from New Brunswick. The meeting will help officials prepare for the upcoming annual meeting of federal, provincial and territorial transportation ministers, which is being held in Charlottetown, P.E.I., in September. “It is my pleasure to welcome my counterparts in Atlantic Canada to focus on transportation issues that affect the region and help bring them to the national level in a strategic, co-ordinated and consistent manner,” said Mr. MacIsaac. The issues discussed at the meeting included: progress on a transportation strategy for the region; the East Coast Gateway initiative; an expanded customs service at the region’s airports to improve trans-border and international air service and; highlighting investment in transportation infrastructure as a priority within the Federal Infrastructure Funding framework. “Improving and expanding our roads and highways is key to ensuring our economic and social well-being, and for keeping our communities safe, vibrant and prosperous,” said Mr. MacIsaac. “My counterparts from other Atlantic provinces understand the importance of a strategic, sustainable and sound transportation system in achieving that goal. I am confident that together, we will present a truly Atlantic perspective at the National Council of Transportation Ministers next month.”last_img read more
