first_imgThe season’s first midweek meet commences at Caymanas Park today, the nine-race programme featuring the annual renewal of the City of Kingston Centenary Cup over a mile for $555,000-$500,000 claiming horses. First run in 1972 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the City of Kingston as the capital city of Jamaica, the race has attracted only six starters, but should still prove interesting with the recent winners IAN LINKS, BRAVE PROSPECT and DR BANNER present. Also expected to figure is the ultra-consistent UNBREAKABLE, who won eight races and $3.4 million in stakes last season. UNBREAKABLE, who finished second to ZACKONTHEATTACK in his last two races, is sure to run well. The same is true of BRAVE PROSPECT, who won easily over this trip on December 31, while the fleet-footed DR BANNER represents genuine speed and will have to be caught even though suspect at a mile. Victory, however, will more than likely go to the in-form four-year-old colt IAN LINKS, who has won two of his last three races. He was a disqualified winner over 1500 metres on December 10, only to be reinstated on appeal three weeks later. Trained by 16-time champion Wayne DaCosta, the son of Fearless Vision – Witchcraft really looked on top of his game when scoring by 31/2 lengths from MONTEGONIAN over this trip in the good time of 1:40.3 some days ago and with champion jockey Omar Walker retaining the ride, looks the right choice. Walker and DaCosta should also team up to win the opening race for native-bred three-year-olds over 1500 metres with FEARLESS SAMURAI in a small field of six, SOUND OF MIRACLE to do likewise in the third, CONCLUSION in the fourth, IGNITION in the seventh and CORALANDO with former champion jockey Dane Nelson in the eighth.
