The current tour comes in support of Wong’s new solo album, The Optimist, released earlier this month. As the album’s announcement press release pondered,Why The Optimist? At age 16, after suffering a concussive head injury, Wong had been told he had two weeks to live. Or maybe he would be fine. The doctors honestly weren’t sure why his right arm kept going numb, but following a month-and-a-half of visits and tests and second opinions, their best guess was that he had a blood clot with the potential to reach his brain at any moment. If that happened, death would be nearly instantaneous. … Wong survived, of course, and while his symptoms eventually faded away, the relentlessly defiant brand of optimism he cultivated that summer never did. In fact, nearly two decades later, it forms the bedrock of his ecstatic new album, The Optimist. Recorded in spontaneous sessions with a series of all-star lineups, the collection showcases both Wong’s prodigious instrumental virtuosity and his broad emotional reach. The songs are profoundly funky, infectiously joyful, and as playful as they are peerless. Paired with his quirky music videos, the tracks feel retro and futuristic all at once. At a time of bitter political strife and deep cultural divisions, Wong has crafted something truly unifying: an album that delights in the pleasures of human connection and revels in the limitless possibility of artistic collaboration. You can listen to The Optimist below, and learn more about the time-pressed creation of the album and its serendipitous list of contributors here.Cory Wong – The Optimist – Full AlbumYou can catch Cory Wong on the road this fall, so check out his tour dates below. first_img1 Apr 2015 Worcestershire’s David Guest does the double as Midlands Steward of the Year Worcestershire’s David Guest has done the double, winning back-to-back titles as the Fuller’s London Pride Golf Steward of the Year for the Midlands. David, from Halesowen Golf Club, received his trophy at the annual presentation lunch at The Counting House in London, which celebrated the national and regional winners. The competition, to find and recognise England’s top golf club stewards, is run by Fuller’s and England Golf and 2014 was its eighth year. The competition attracted hundreds of votes for the nominated stewards. David commented: “It’s so nice to be appreciated. This is voted on by the members and so it means more to win.” The judges applauded David’s creativity, enthusiasm, energy and efforts to make Halesowen Golf Club a real community. He has introduced many initiatives and is always looking for ways to improve his skills for the benefit of the club.  He actively networks to bring in extra functions, social membership and junior participation to Halesowen. He initiated the club’s Christmas competition, where it’s compulsory to wear a Christmas jumper on the course. His football themed ‘Pride of the Midlands’ event is now legendary at Halesowen and is supported by players from Aston Villa, Birmingham, Wolves and West Bromwich. The tough economic conditions meant David and other staff recently accepted salary cuts. But that didn’t dampen his resolve and commitment to the club and the bar turnover is now growing year on year due to his efforts. He is the club’s entertainment secretary and the junior organiser, overseeing an increase in junior participation. David and the other winners all received their trophies from England Golf Chief Executive, David Joy, and from Richard Fuller, Fuller’s Corporate Affairs Director. The other winners were: national and South East winner, Samantha Hudson of Swaffham Golf Club, Norfolk; North winner, David Prior of Blackley Golf Club, Lancashire; and South West winner, Kevin Brown of Sherborne Golf Club, Dorset. They were chosen after a rigorous judging process. The 201s Stewards of the Year, Simon and Karen Ward of Wilmslow Golf Club, Cheshire, joined the judges to whittle down the record entry to three finalists from each region. Each of these 12 were visited personally before the four regional winners were selected, having been judged on their commitment, innovation and standard of service and presentation, together with that extra special something which sets them apart.
