Lakers’ Avery Bradley pitches NBA for more support for social issues, per report

admin no comments

first_imgThe last decade of the NBA has seen players protest police brutality and gun violence through shirts, through social media posts, through calls for change. This time, with the nation rapt with attention on the social issues of race, Lakers’ guard Avery Bradley is one of the NBA players who wants to see more.ESPN was first to report that Bradley is one of the leaders of a coalition of players asking the NBA to take a more active role in social change as the league plans its resumption next month in Orlando. In a league made up largely of black players, many of whom have been invested in the protests in the wake of the death of George Floyd, Bradley told ESPN he would like to see the NBA change hiring practices within coaching ranks and front offices, as well as more partnerships with black-owned businesses and contributions to charities that could help black communities. The coalition, which also includes Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving, has expressed hesitation about starting again. Bradley reportedly helped organize conference calls in the last week to discuss the steps the coalition would like to see the NBA take before it restarts. Some players, including Irving and Lakers center Dwight Howard, have openly discussed sitting out when play is scheduled to resume at Walt Disney World Resort next month. Lakers, Clippers schedules set for first round of NBA playoffs How athletes protesting the national anthem has evolved over 17 years However players like Bradley have cited that the NBA’s power structure doesn’t reflect the makeup of the league: Only one NBA owner (Jordan) is black, and only a handful of teams have black executives with decision-making power.Bradley emphasized that players have already tried to help these initiatives on their own — they’re now seeking teams and the league at large to pitch in more.“We don’t need to say more,” he told ESPN. “We need to find a way to achieve more. Protesting during an anthem, wearing T-shirts is great, but we need to see real actions being put into the works.” Trail Blazers, Grizzlies advance to NBA play-in game; Suns, Spurs see playoff dreams dashed AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREUCLA alum Kenny Clark signs four-year contract extension with Packers“The actual act of sitting out doesn’t directly fight systemic racism,” Bradley said to ESPN. “But it does highlight the reality that without black athletes, the NBA wouldn’t be what it is today. The league has a responsibility to our communities in helping to empower us — just as we have made the NBA brand strong.”While player uncertainty has swayed some of the confidence that the NBA expressed as recently as last week as it hammered out details with the player’s union, commissioner Adam Silver said on Monday night on an ESPN broadcast that he thought players would have an opportunity to have a platform they could use for political change in Orlando, but is cognizant that some players may choose to sit out.Silver is also aware that players are watching the league’s actions, expecting the league to do more than it has in the past. Rather than quickly assemble a fund, Silver said the league is trying to be more deliberate in how it will support the issues the players care about.“We’re really thinking in a more holistic way,” Silver said during an NBA broadcast on Tuesday night. “How can we affect changes that are meaningful.”The league has been largely supportive of players’ political actions in the last few weeks, and Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan has pledged $100 million over the next decade. center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error Related Articles Trail Blazers beat Grizzlies in play-in, earn first-round series with the Lakers Lakers practice early hoping to answer all questions last_img read more

Focus on Kansas City: Big-play Chiefs vs. struggling Raiders defense a recipe for disaster?

first_imgOne needn’t be well versed in football analytics to realize the Raiders may be in a heap of trouble in Kansas City on Sunday. All you need to know is no NFL team has given up more big passing plays than the Raiders defense (55 plays of 20 yards or more), and no team has delivered more huge plays in the passing game than the Chiefs. If the Raiders couldn’t stop the offensively-challenged Jets from matching their season-high in points and explosive pass plays in a humiliating 34-3 loss on Sunday, …last_img read more

32″ 80cm Long Hair Heat Resistant Spiral Curly Cosplay Wig : Lovely, but easily ruined.

first_imgFantastically good quality even comes with a wig cap but i would say order it early as it didn’t come in time. When ordering it tod me one date once i pressed buy it told me a later date very misleading but pleased with product and will wear it for a different occasion. Decent for the price, nice colours. . Not quite as curly as pictured. I found that the very ends were a bit messy and it was a little long so i cut the bottom layer to match the next one, it made it look a lot more full and it’s a better length for me. It now goes down to my underbust. A litttle on the shiny side but easily fixed and i suspect it will probably tangle well. Much better than what i was expecting, was in a nice condition and was pretty comfortable to wear, it was a bit too long for what i needed it for (cosplay) so i trimmed and styled it without any issues. Wore it all day with no problems. This is a fantastic wig, i bought the blond one first the colour is lovely. It’s very plump and like others i agree it suits better while wearing a hat, though that’s just my preference it works well as a sand alone. It’s very delicate so it will take a lot of care and looking after. Bought the brown and will be buying others. Decent for the price, nice colours. . Not quite as curly as pictured. Delivery was very fast as well and i picked standard delivery, came within 3 days which i was very happy with. Fantastically good quality even comes with a wig cap but i would say order it early as it didn’t come in time. Got a little tangled and now looks too messy to wear. Amazing quality for such a low price, highly highly recommend. Really impressed with the wig, colour is great, it has a lovely shine to it and feels really soft. Delivery was very fast as well and i picked standard delivery, came within 3 days which i was very happy with. Girlfriend loves it, will be buying more in different colours, so she can change her hair colour when ever she pleases without the negative effects of hair dyes and bleach. Lovely hair, this is my daily wig now, it is more lightweight than the wig i am used to wearing so what i do is i buy two wigs and wear them together to get more fullness and i just attach with kirby grips,(or you can sow them together but i keep separate for ease of brushing) the top wig sits securely on the bottom wig and you cannot notice i am wearing two. However if you are not used to a fuller wig and just like it slim line then this wig is still good. I prefer a straight fringe so i cut the fringe with hairdresser scissors, which i had to do with the wig i used to wear also. I love the lose curls in this wig and have had many compliments, i will continue to buy from here :)update: i feel this wig has gotten thinner, i could never go out just wearing one and now i buy three and wear them secured together with kirby grips, this gives a full lovely appearance. Pretty wig with an annoying flaw. . Wig itself is pretty, however annoyingly there is a visible piece of dark grey netting at the parting/hairline that appears to be part of the design, but is very noticeable at the middle of your forehead when wearing the wig. Unfortunate because if it wasn’t for that this would be perfect, as in all other aspects it’s one of the nicest wigs i’ve ever bought. May just have been a design fault with my particular wig, but unfortunately i was unable to ask for a return/replacement as i needed it for a costume a couple of days after it arrived, so now am stuck with it. Lovely, but easily ruined. . Perfect the first time i wore it, but it got incredibly tangled. The second time i wore it i had to cut off about 6 inches of matted ends. Too tangled to wear a 3rd time and had to be thrown away. Wore this to go with my wonder woman costume and people actually thought it was my real hair. I really liked how it looked – it does look amazing -. I really liked how it looked – it does look amazing – but if you looked at it from the top the mesh thing shows through and even though i hardly wore it apart from a couple of minutes on two occasions it started falling apart a bit. So it was sort of a single-use thing which is a shame, because it does look really good. Girlfriend loves it, will be buying more in different colours, so she can change her hair colour when ever she pleases without the negative effects of hair dyes and bleach. It made perfect halloween costume. Bought this wig for a party and its brilliant. Just wish i had more excuse to wear. Bought this wig for a party and its brilliant. Use mandate to resolve Kashmir issue: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq tells Narendra Modi

admin no comments

first_imgHurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to use his massive mandate “to play a decisive role in the resolution of the Kashmir issue”. “Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s oft-repeated offer of dialogue should be considered by the new dispensation in New Delhi as the way forward,” said the Mirwaiz in his address at Srinagar’s Jamia Masjid, where thousands of devotees offered prayers on the last Friday of Ramzan. “People of India overwhelmingly voted for Mr. Modi. This mandate gives PM Modi an opportunity and the power to play a decisive role in resolution of the issue. It is an opportune time to initiate political processes,” said the Mirwaiz. He demanded that the Centre take Kashmir specific confidence-building measures like release of prisoners and revocation of laws like the Armed Forces Special Powers Act to create an atmosphere for dialogue.Hurriyat leader addresses OIC on KashmirMeanwhile, a Hurriyat leader has addressed the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) 14th Islamic Summit in Saudi Arabia’s Makkah and called for its intervention “to help in ending rights violations in J&K and push for a final resolution of the Kashmir conflict”.Abdullah Gilani, who represented Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Geelani, in his address to the OIC’s contact group on Kashmir said, “The OIC should take a serious note of all developments in J&K, including rights violations. It should intervene and prevail upon the United Nations to establish an internal commission of inquiry on Kashmir”.The Hurriyat leader said the non-resolution of this “dispute has turned entire South Asian region into a tinderbox”.“Only a couple of months ago, the world watched with awe and horror how an incident in Kashmir almost pushed the neighbours to the precipice of a nuclear confrontation. While the international community was able to douse the flames of war, the spark that triggers these flames every now and then continues to remain neglected,” Mr. Abdullah told the OIC.The OIC meeting was attended by its Secretary General Dr Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen, foreign ministers of Turkey and Pakistan and deputy foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan and Niger. The meeting on Kashmir a day after Mr. Al-Othaimeen warned against “attempts to suppress or degrade Kashmir issue by linking it to terrorism, which is in violation of United Nations resolutions and International law”.He also called for “a genuine dialogue between Pakistan and India to resume, which will be the best framework for addressing all outstanding issues, particularly the dispute.”last_img read more

Australia in charge of fifth Ashes Test after Usman Khawaja’s unbeaten 91

admin no comments

first_imgShare on Pinterest Australia cricket team Share via Email Alongside Smith was a contented Usman Khawaja. He has had a modest series but he seized the chance to rectify ugly figures. He was 91 not out at the close, an elegant innings punctuated by the odd frantic moment against the spinners. Australia ended the day on 193 for two, which meant there was the prospect of much more toil for the tourists’ unbalanced attack. Up front they had their record wicket-takers, who yielded runs as grudgingly as ever. Behind them were two novices, Tom Curran and the debutant Mason Crane, plus the out-of-sorts Moeen Ali.All three support acts bowled reasonably though there was always the reassurance for the batsmen that there were runs around for the patient. Crane was the most compelling to watch. From him there was a lot of zest and a little zip and he did not appear overawed to be bowling at two of the finest in the world, Smith and David Warner, all of which was impressive. But on Friday night after 17 overs he was still in pursuit of his first Test wicket – and his first maiden.Life might have been simpler for Crane if he had had the chance to bowl at Cameron Bancroft, who is struggling at the moment. In the second over of Australia’s reply he missed a straight ball from Stuart Broad and set off for the pavilion without bothering to look at his splattered stumps. Unlike Khawaja his future as a Test player is looking bleak. Cricket Share on LinkedIn Since you’re here… Australia paceman Pat Cummins puts down marker for a glittering 2018 Read more There was little respite for England as the temperature rose in Sydney. There was a time when Australia seemed to relax when confronted with a dead rubber but not any more. The band of coaches behind the scenes would never allow such slackness. Nor would Steve Smith, in the form of his life while clocking up his 6,000th Test run – only two players have got there faster, Don Bradman and Gary Sobers – and who was still there at the close. He has only 44 runs to his name but there is no sign his appetite has diminished. Warner settled easily again but he was becalmed in Jimmy Anderson’s second spell before being defeated by a skilful off-cutter. Smith received the reception of a returning hero, took a couple of deep breaths and proceeded to carry on where he had left off in Melbourne. There was more respect than aggression when facing Crane with every ball played on its merits.Khawaja’s approach was a little different against the spinners. There would be passages of dutiful defence and then the odd big shot, usually executed effectively, a lofted drive or a reverse sweep. But for the most part their unbeaten partnership was solid, professional and pragmatic, something of a contrast to the morning play since the second half of the England innings was a comedy of errors preceded by a moment of sublime brilliance by Smith at second slip.At the start of play Moeen began with a notable absence of melodrama: off the mark first ball with a single to midwicket, some cagey leaves and no wild indiscretions against Nathan Lyon, while Dawid Malan was, more predictably, wary and watchful. Then Mitchell Starc found the edge of Malan’s bat and thereby produced the catch of the series. The ball reached the slip cordon on another sluggish surface but it was just within reach of Smith, who stuck out a left hand where the ball remained even after the fielder had completed his dive, a marvel of relaxed athleticism. Curran was determined to be positive while Moeen battled away, though both should have been dismissed within the space of four balls.First Curran, on 21, miscued a drive against Lyon and a straightforward catch was dropped at mid-on by Pat Cummins. In the next over, bowled by the chastened Cummins, Moeen, on 22, top-edged an attempted pull shot and the ball lobbed in the air. Josh Hazlewood ran around from mid-on to take the catch but somehow failed to lay hands on the ball, which bumped into his chest and on to the grass. There was not much Cummins could say. Moeen did not really make Australia pay for this mistake and edged a short ball to Tim Paine after scoring a sketchy, though orthodox 30.In came Broad, elevated to No9 and, as ever, this coincided with a barrage of bouncers. Australia had made their point earlier in the series, showcasing their ruthless determination to bombard the England tail. In this case they displayed their inflexibility and gifted runs. The pitch was slow and Broad has acclimatised to the barrage; he premeditated the line of attack and produced a few blistering shots against Cummins. Two of them sailed for six way over the square-leg boundary.Curran joined in the fun until he was caught at short-leg off Cummins and then Broad top-edged a heave against Lyon in pursuit of another six. Surprisingly by the end of his innings Broad had become the second highest six-hitter in Tests at the SCG, joining Matthew Hayden on seven, though still six behind Adam Gilchrist. Crane’s first Test innings ended ignominiously when he was run out after a misunderstanding with Anderson.
