Since its inception in 2013, 32,500 schoolgirls have been helped. The team of Mimi Women are (from left) Ropfiwa Nemukula (head of social media), Tracy Vance (business development manager), Ramona Kasavan (chief executive officer), Phumzile Sithole (chief operating officer and creative director) and Nicole Heywood (head of stakeholder relations). Established in 2013, Mimi Women has donated 1 million sanitary pads to keep 32,500 girls in school. (Image supplied)Melissa Javan“The reason that some of you don’t come to school is because you don’t have sanitary pads. If you’re missing school it means you are not going to become what you want to be in the future, right? As a 29-year-old businesswoman, those things upset me,” Ramona Kasavan told the girls at a South African school. She was speaking as Mimi Women distributed sanitary towels to the learners. The event has been uploaded to YouTube. “We hope to keep you in school. You’re going to have six months of sanitary pads,” Kasavan, Mimi Women CEO, told the girls.Mimi Women is a social enterprise that will celebrate its fourth birthday in October this year. It is a female only-owned sanitary pads company that started in rural KwaZulu-Natal. Its aim is to keep girls in school where they can be safe from turning to illicit vices, because an educated girl is an empowered girl, says the Mimi site.It costs only R180 to supply a schoolgirl with a year’s supply of sanitary towels, says the team. Donations come either from individuals or through companies that have partnered with Mimi Women in their corporate social investment units. The entrepreneur would distribute affordable, quality sanitary pads to schools and other businesses in her sector.“In addition to an allocated geographical area to service, the franchisee will acquire a delivery scooter, five vending machines and an incinerator,” Kasavan said. “The vending machines, stocked with Mimi pads, will be strategically placed in schools or high-traffic communal areas.”The vending machines would be serviced by three-wheeler tuk-tuks. The drivers would regularly stock the vending machines and would collect the sanitary waste from schools’ sanibins for the safe disposal of sanitary pads. The pads would then be burned using an eco-friendly incinerator.“We have identified our target market as the 500 million women of the African continent, hence the adoption of Mimi, a Swahili name from East Africa,” said Kasavan.Watch Ramona Kasavan give tips on how to write a business plan:Empowering womenWomen who sell its products in an initiative known as Empower Me, are known as “agents of change” by Mimi. Through it women can sell Mimi sanitary pads and earn commission.“Women who fall under the Empower Me programme are currently active in their communities, selling Mimi pads,” said Nicole Heywood, Mimi Women stakeholder executive.“These women are mostly from Gauteng and a few are from KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West. We are hoping to expand more into other areas in terms of acquiring more women in other provinces, because we have done corporate social investment road shows in all nine provinces.”Heywood said although the organisation had not been to all areas, it knew there was a need. Many women and young girls were desperate for sanitary pads and did not have access to them. Given this, the group wanted to grow its Empower Me business to empower those women and to help girls. The MimiBizBox, which costs R799, comprises 600 pads. Each pack of six pads costs R10, which can then be resold for R15.The packs include marketing information and access to an online portal. The idea is for women to recruit additional sales reps and establish their own network, which will be based on commission.Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? PRISM Could Cost U.S. Cloud Vendors Billions

first_imgServerless Backups: Viable Data Protection for … brian proffitt Given the increasing paranoia about surveillance, businesses will need much cooler heads if they are going to actually stick with cloud computing and reap such benefits. Related Posts How Intelligent Data Addresses the Chasm in Cloud Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Cloud Hosting for WordPress: Why Everyone is Mo… Right after the revelations from Edward Snowden about the alleged secret NSA program known as PRISM, there was speculation on ReadWrite about the fallout from the existence of a government program that could with seeming impunity dip its data-gathering hands into anyone’s cloud data at any time.See also PRISM Fallout: U.S. Internet Companies Stained By Intelligence Actions and PRISM Fallout Part 2: Companies Will Store More Data Behind The FirewallNow that speculation has some numbers to attach. A new whitepaper from the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation (ITIF) estimates that the U.S. cloud computing sector could stand to lose up to $35 billion over the next three years as a result of companies pulling back from cloud computing.Update: A blog post from Forrester analyst James Staten indicates that the ITIF estimate of the impact to the cloud sector may be far too low.  “We think this estimate is too low and could be as high as $180 billion or a 25% hit to overall IT service provider revenues in that same timeframe. That is, if you believe the assumption that government spying is more a concern than the business benefits of going cloud,” Staten wrote.Since PRISM is supposed to be aimed at non-U.S. citizens, the ITIF postulates, international companies are likely to be the most adverse to using U.S.-based cloud services. If 10% of international business flees U.S. cloud vendors, then the three-year hit will be $21.5 billion. But if 20% of global companies parts ways with U.S. cloud businesses, then the sector would see that $35 billion loss. The ITIF suspects that many international governments and cloud vendors are bound to try to exploit PRISM. Indeed, European and Asian vendors have already been using the U.S. Patriot Act for quite some time to scare potential customers into basing their data in home-grown cloud services.Reinhard Clemens, CEO of Deutsche Telekom’s T-systems group, argued in 2011 that creating a German or European cloud computing certification could advantage domestic cloud computing providers. He stated, ‘The Americans say that no matter what happens I’ll release the data to the government if I’m forced to do so, from anywhere in the world. Certain German companies don’t want others to access their systems. That’s why we’re well-positioned if we can say we’re a European provider in a European legal sphere and no American can get to them.’PRISM, then, is just pouring gasoline on an already burning fire, according to the ITIF.Staten believes companies may think twice about moving to cloud services anywhere. His reasoning? Government surveillance programs are not just confined to the U.S., which is bad enough. They may be global.Add it all up and you have a net loss for the service provider space of about $180 billion by 2016 which would be roughly a 25% decline in the overall IT services market by that final year, using Forrester market estimates. All from the unveiling of a single kangaroo-court action called PRISM.But Staten is not sounding the evacuation alarms. He believes that with careful planning, the benefits of cloud computing will still far outweigh the risk factors for any business. The fact of the matter is that the IT services market is a part of our portfolios because it provides capabilities we value either against IT or business metrics. And it’s highly likely these values are worth more to you than the potential risk you think your company faces due to government surveillance. Tags:#cloud computing#Prism last_img read more

Rep Lucido has high school civics test bill signed to law

first_img Categories: Lucido News,News 28Dec Rep. Lucido has high school civics test bill signed to law LANSING – Civics is such an important subject to state Rep. Peter Lucido that one of the first bills he submitted required high school students to pass a test also given to individuals seeking U.S. citizenship.House Bill 4136 was today signed into law.“It’s very important that we all know about our country and the framework that makes up our government,” said Rep. Lucido, R-Shelby Township. “Having House Bill 4136 signed ensures that students will know the powers of our country’s legislative branch of government, what the difference is between an electoral college and popular vote, and other key government details, before they can graduate high school. This is information that matters, just like English and mathematics, and students should be aware of what their government involves.”HB 4136, now Public Act 391 of 2016, requires passing a civics test populated with questions from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) test. The local board of education will set the parameters of the test, including picking from 100 possible questions and allowing for re-taking the test.Lt. Gov. Brian Calley signed PA 391 during a brief ceremony today at the Capitol. Also attending was Patrick Hortos, a friend of Rep. Lucido, as well as several high school students.“I want to thank Lt. Gov. Calley and Gov. Snyder for making this dream a reality because we need young adults to be engaged and understand our government,” said Rep. Lucido. “I would like to thank my middle school civics teacher, Mr. Joe Goode of St. Isaac Jogues in St. Clair Shores, for first informing me so long ago how important civics is. In addition, I want to thank my good friend, Pat Hortos, for encouraging me from the beginning to write this legislation.”Rep. Lucido also thanked Lucian Spataro of the Joe Foss Institute, an Arizona-based non-profit that promotes education for civics-related subjects, for joining him for House and Senate committee testimony. The legislation passed both chambers with bi-partisan support in December.“This is the greatest country in the world and I hope more Michigan kids will have a better understanding as to why that is true from this day forward,” said Rep. Lucido. “That helps make today worth the wait.”last_img read more
