first_imgWednesday Apr 28, 2021 Another Lions blow as George North is ruled out of tour with awful injury Wales star George North is out of contention for the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa after confirming he has suffered a serious knee injury.ADVERTISEMENTIt is a major blow for Lions head coach Warren Gatland, who names his squad next week.North was hurt during Ospreys’ victory over Cardiff Blues last weekend, and he tweeted:“Sport can be cruel. We all know the risks when we take the field. Unfortunately, I ruptured my ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) on Saturday and will need surgery next week. Heartbroken is an understatement.”The normal recovery period for such an injury is six-nine months. The Ospreys said: “The Ospreys can confirm wing George North has suffered an ACL injury to his right knee and will be ruled out for the rest of the season.ADVERTISEMENT“The Wales wing saw a specialist in London earlier this week and will undergo surgery next week.”North, 29, was widely tipped for a starting place in Gatland’s Test team against the world champion Springboks. He had been switched from wing to outside centre with great success by Wales head coach Wayne Pivac this season and played a key role in Wales’ Guinness Six Nations title-winning campaign.North has won 102 caps for Wales and played in all three Lions Tests against Australia eight years ago.ADVERTISEMENTIt is a second setback in 24 hours for Gatland after Wasps and England lock Joe Launchbury saw his Lions selection hopes ended, also by a ruptured knee ligament. The Wiz Tapped for NBC’s Next Live Broadcast Before B’way

admin no comments

first_imgReady to feel a brand new day? NBC will present a live broadcast of Charlie Smalls and William F. Brown’s The Wiz this year. The ‘70s take on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz will hit the small screen on December 3. Entering into a unique partnership with NBC on The Wiz—to be executive produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron—is Cirque du Soleil, whose new stage theatrical division will co-produce the live TV event and then present it as a Broadway revival for the 2016-17 season. Casting for both the NBC telecast and Cirque du Soleil’s Great White Way production will be announced at a later date.Tony Award-winning director Kenny Leon will stage both the television production and Broadway revival of The Wiz in collaboration with Tony winner and Broadway icon Harvey Fierstein, who will contribute new material to the original Broadway book by Brown. The Wiz follows the familiar L. Frank Baum story of Dorothy and her adventures in Oz, but with a rock-filled revamp. Smalls’ soulful score includes show tunes that have transcended the divide between theater and mainstream pop culture, including “Ease on Down the Road,” “No Bad News” and “Home.”The show premiered on Broadway in 1975 and won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical later that year. The 1978 film adaptation starred Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Lena Horne. The last major New York production took place in 2009 as part of New York City Center’s Encores! program and starred Grammy winner Ashanti, Aladdin Tony winner James Monroe Iglehart, LaChanze, Joshua Henry and more. The musical was previously reported as a contender for this year’s pick, along with The Music Man. This marks the third annual live musical broadcast for the Peacock network, following the gangbusters The Sound of Music Live! and the less-but-still-moderately successful Peter Pan. Fox will follow suit early next year with a live presentation of Grease with Vanessa Hudgens and Julianne Hough. Also on the NBC table is a live telecast of Aaron Sorkin’s A Few Good Men.No Great White Way theater has been announced for the revival, but Cirque has been rumored to be looking at making a long-term home at the Lyric, where On the Town is currently playing. However, the Lyric is owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group and Zadan and Meron’s recently reported Main Stem production deal is with the Shuberts, who own 17 other Broadway theaters. Harvest tips for flood damaged crops

admin no comments

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest After this year’s record rainfall and flooding across parts of the Midwest, farmers should scout their fields carefully and be aware of any conditions that could damage crops during harvest, a Purdue Extension grain storage expert advises.“As we approach harvest, it will be important to prepare adequately so that we prevent deterioration of the portions of crops we are able to harvest,” said Klein Ileleji, associate professor of agricultural and biological engineering.Crop development has been delayed in some flooded areas. It could be necessary to adjust the speed of the combine and height of the cutter bar to account for differences in plant growth, Ileleji said. Before harvesting, farmers should look for differences in cob size and the number of kernels per cob, as well as variability in the maturity of bean plants, he said.“That way the operator will know in advance where equipment adjustments will be necessary during cutting,” Ileleji said. It’s also important to check the moisture level of the soil. Some areas in a field might be significantly wetter than others.Once the maturity level and moisture content are known, farmers should consult equipment dealers, manufacturers or machine manuals to find out how to set machines for the different conditions they might encounter in their fields, Ileleji said.Other harvest tips:• Clean all machinery including combines, dryers, bins, augers, elevator legs and ladder rungs. Failure to do so could cause restricted airflow in bins and dryers, provide a breeding ground for insects or cause other safety issues. Ileleji recommended treating bins in advance with an approved empty-bin insecticide, or using heat — a minimum of 122 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 to 4 hours — to get rid of any pests.• Check equipment to see if repairs or replacement parts are needed and perform any necessary service. Ileleji said farmers should not make repairs to gas lines or electrical equipment and wiring if they are not licensed to do so. Also, it is important to have enough fuel available to keep the machinery running as needed.• Calibrate and test moisture meters and interior bin sensors to ensure that they are working. Ileleji also recommended checking moisture readings of one sample of grain against the reading of that same sample at the elevator where the grain will be delivered so there is no discrepancy.Ileleji said planning and preparing correctly is the least expensive way to address potential harvest issues.“The harvest months are always busy, but planning ahead will definitely help ease some of the burden and put you in a better position for successfully harvesting your corn and soybeans,” he said.last_img read more

London Olympics: Bill Gates offers help to promote table tennis in US

admin no comments

first_imgThe International Table Tennis Federation(ITTF) plans to work with Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates to promote table tennis in the US, ITTF President Adham Sharara said. The initiative was brought up after Gates came to London to watch the game between US teen player Ariel Hsing and Chinese Li Xiaoxia on Sunday, Sharara told Xinhua in an interview on Tuesday.Sharara didn’t disclose the details, but said that Gates offered to help after watching Hsing’s match, in which the 16-year-old girl nearly pulled off one of biggest upsets in London Games, pushing No. 2 seed Li to the limit before losing 2-4 in six tight sets.”He (Gates) was surprised to see the young American girl played so well. He was very motivated. He asked me what he can do to help promote table tennis in the United States. I think we’ll work with him. If the United States becomes strong in table tennis, it’s also good for China,” Sharara said.Sharara said the case was a “good example” which showed that ITTF’s efforts in promoting the sport has worked. The ITTF has altered its rules for the London Games, allowing only two players from one nation to enter the singles events. Three players from each National Olympic Committee(NOC) were allowed to enter the singles in previous Games.”The reason we do this is to give more NOCs to participate in our game. If we give maximum participation to the top countries, someone like Hsing will not come to the Olympics. They have no chance. But if we give them the chance, we can see what they can do,” Sharara said.Sharara said the change increased the pressure on strong teams, like China, Japan, South Korea and Germany. “But they understand now because they saw other NOCs participating. Countries before had no chance to play in table tennis, now they are participating.”advertisementlast_img read more
