Why Sekou Konneh is the Right Man for the VPO Job

admin no comments

first_imgFlashback: Mr. Konneh addresses sports journalists shortly after he returned from the 2017 CAF champions League.By Anthony Stephens The Liberia Football Association goes to Congress this weekend in Monrovia with several issues expected to be discussed for the revamping of the beautiful game in this part of the world. An election for the post of vice president for operations (VPO) of the local football house will be one of the agenda items for Saturday’s congress. The position is unquestionably one of the most strategic and important ones at the LFA.But it’s been inactive and lifeless in recent times—desperately needing a special individual to regain the lost respect that has vanished from this key post. With Liberian football still in a shambolic state, someone with passion, energy, and innovation is urgently needed to turn the country’s administrative woes and misfortunes around. And there’s only one name on my mind at the moment, Sekou Konneh.During my highly successful days as an active sports reporter, I met and promoted so many athletes and administrators. Mr. Sekou Konneh, the current President of Barracks Young Controllers Football Club (BYC FC) was one of them.‘Mr. President,’ as I have always called him, is without argument a prepared, passionate and seasoned football administrator.Renowned for his disciplinary ability and straightforwardness, the BYC supremo is football crazy. He lives, talks, thinks, and walks football. In other words, football is his life and a part of his DNA. He’s not a saint, but no one can doubt his experience, qualification, competence, honesty, and kindheartedness. As a former assistant secretary general of the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL), I have seen this down to earth man immensely and positively contributing to the growth and development of the beautiful game in Liberia. From transforming underdogs Barracks Young Controllers to a powerhouse in Liberian football to personally and selflessly overseeing the growth and development of players from other clubs, Mr. Konneh has excellently paid his dues to football. It’s time for football to reward him kindly. He deserves a bigger role in football and in this case, the significant VPO position. Aside from all that he brings to football, he has several years of remarkable experience as an educator.Currently, Mr. Konneh, or Ayatollah or Prof. Konneh as his students call him, is the Dean of Liberia College (College of Social Sciences and Humanity) of the University of Liberia (UL). With his challenger in Saturday’s election pulling out, I have no doubt that this reputable football administrator will inject reform, passion, and discipline into the administrative aspect of Liberian football to resurrect it.Anthony Stephens is the former Assistant Secretary General of the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL).Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Piper Perabo Shares More Experiences Of Visiting Syrian Refugees In Greece

admin no comments

first_imgPiper Perabo has written a second blog about her recent experiences visiting Syrian refugees in Greece.“There are two major disconnects in the conversation surrounding today’s refugee crisis,” she wrote on Medium.com. “First of all, I’ve heard people, including respected journalists, refer to the situation in the Middle East and Europe as a “migrant crisis.” Let’s set the record straight: Migrants are people who make a conscious decision to leave their countries to seek a better life elsewhere — to find work, a better education, or higher standard of living. Refugees are forced to leave their homes because of conflict and are therefore protected under international laws put in place after World War II.“The second disconnect is that people with wildly overblown fears are setting the tone of the debate about this crisis and, as such, are distorting facts. The United States will not recognize persons who have participated in war crimes and violations of humanitarian and human rights law, as refugees. They are specifically excluded from these protection laws.”To read her full article, click here. To read her first blog, click here.last_img read more

State finance ministers seek simplicity in GST at meeting

admin no comments

first_imgState finance ministers have called for the proposed Goods and Services Tax (GST) to be simplified, but did not discuss what rate it should be set at, indicating scant progress on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s priority reform. With less than a week for the winter session of parliament to begin, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley missed the meeting of a high-level GST committee, which also lacks a permanent chairman after the last one quit amid a corruption scandal.Manish Sisodia, deputy chief minister and finance minister of the Delhi city government, said the panel wanted to focus on simplifying administration of the GST rather than lowering the rate.”Rates were not discussed today,” said Sisodia, who chaired the meeting. A sub-committee was set up to decide on a threshold below which small businesses would be exempted from the sales tax, he told reporters in New Delhi on Friday.Jaitley said this week his top priority for the parliamentary session starting on 26 November was to convince the opposition to support the GST bill in the upper house of parliament, where the government lacks a majority.Modi needs the backing of the upper house to pass a key enabling amendment to the Constitution, but has faced entrenched resistance led by the opposition Congress party that he defeated in a general election 18 months ago.His ruling nationalist party is on the back foot after suffering a heavy defeat in an election in the populous state of Bihar. The GST, the most ambitious tax reform since independence in 1947, would unify Asia’s third-largest economy into a single market, and could add as much as two percentage points to the economy, the government estimates.A percentage rate has not yet been agreed but a range in the low-to-mid 20s has been discussed, leading to concerns that such a high rate would encourage tax evasion. Sisodia, speaking for Delhi, said he supported a rate of 25%.Finance ministry officials say introducing the new tax could increase the revenues of the federal and state governments substantially as all consumers would pay taxes on most goods and services. However, many state governments fear revenue losses as a result of GST being introduced, and a parallel discussion is also under way about how to compensate them, complicating efforts to reach a workable compromise. The GST law would aim to cut red tape for taxpayers by replacing an array of federal and state taxes – ranging from 25% to 30%, while ending the practice of imposing a levy on goods coming from outside a state.last_img read more
