Biden Covid advisor says U.S. lockdown of 4 to 6 weeks could control pandemic and revive economy

first_imgOn Wednesday, Osterholm said such a lockdown would help the country bring the virus under control, “like they did in New Zealand and Australia.” Epidemiologists have repeatedly pointed to New Zealand, Australia and other parts of Asia that have brought the number of daily new cases to under 10 as an example of how to contain the virus.“We could really watch ourselves cruising into the vaccine availability in the first and second quarter of next year while bringing back the economy long before that,” he said Wednesday. On the current trajectory, Osterholm said the U.S. is headed for dark days before a vaccine becomes available. He said health-care systems across the country are already overwhelmed in places like El Paso, Texas, where local officials have already closed businesses and the federal government is sending resources to handle a surge in deaths caused by Covid-19.Osterholm said the country needs leadership. The president-elect is up to the task of providing that leadership, Osterholm said, adding that it could also come from local and state officials or those in the medical community. He referenced the fireside chats broadcast over radio during former President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s terms, through which Roosevelt addressed the country on issues ranging from the Great Depression to World War II.“People don’t want to hear that El Paso isn’t an isolated event. El Paso, in many instances, will become the norm,” he said. “I think that the message is how do we get through this. We need FDR moments right now. We need fireside chats. We need somebody to tell America, ‘this is what in the hell is going to happen.’” Shutting down businesses and paying people for lost wages for four to six weeks could help keep the coronavirus pandemic in check and get the economy on track until a vaccine is approved and distributed, said Dr. Michael Osterholm, a coronavirus advisor to President-elect Joe Biden.Osterholm, who serves as director of the Center of Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, said earlier this week that the country is headed toward “Covid hell.” Cases are rising as more people grow tired of wearing masks and social distancing, suffering from so-called “pandemic fatigue,” he said Wednesday. Colder weather is also driving people indoors where the virus can spread more easily.A nationwide lockdown would drive the number of new cases and hospitalizations down to manageable levels while the world awaits a vaccine, he told Yahoo Finance on Wednesday.- Advertisement – – Advertisement – Dr. Michael Osterholm, Regents Professor, McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair in Public Health, and director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, announced advances for COVID-19 testing in Minnesota, Wednesday, April 22, 2020 in St. Paul, MN.Glen Stubbe | Star Tribune | Getty Imagescenter_img “We could pay for a package right now to cover all of the wages, lost wages for individual workers for losses to small companies to medium-sized companies or city, state, county governments. We could do all of that,” he said. “If we did that, then we could lockdown for four-to-six weeks.”He referenced an August op-ed he wrote with Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari in which the two argued for more restrictive and uniform lockdowns across the nation.“The problem with the March-to-May lockdown was that it was not uniformly stringent across the country. For example, Minnesota deemed 78 percent of its workers essential,” they wrote in the New York Times. “To be effective, the lockdown has to be as comprehensive and strict as possible.”- Advertisement – – Advertisement –last_img read more

U.S. Soccer says it has paid women’s national team more than men’s team

admin no comments

first_imgThe U.S. Soccer Federation claims it has paid the women’s national team millions of dollars more than the men’s team over the span of nearly a decade.U.S. Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro released an open letter Monday to federation members, explaining a financial breakdown that showed the results of extensive analysis over 10 years of data.  FIFA wants to expand Women’s World Cup to 32 teams within days “Just as our WNT players have shared their perspective, I strongly believe that you — as U.S. Soccer members, stakeholders, sponsors and partners — deserve to hear ours,” Cordeiro wrote Monday. “Now that the Women’s World Cup is behind us, a common understanding of key facts will also help advance our shared work to grow women’s soccer in America as well as the larger national discussion about equality.”U.S. Soccer said its conclusions from the financial study were verified by an independent accounting firm. The analysis found that members of the women’s team were paid $34.1 million from 2010-18 in salaries and bonuses, while players on the men’s national team were paid $26.4 million by the federation during the same time frame.  Related News Here’s the response from USWNT players spokesperson Molly Levinson to today’s letter from US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro and the federation’s contention that it has paid the USWNT more than the USMNT over the past decade. pic.twitter.com/sOpqDx1g4U— Grant Wahl (@GrantWahl) July 29, 2019Molly Levinson, a spokeswoman for the players, called the letter “a sad attempt” to silence the overwhelming amount of support the USWNT received from fans, sponsors and the United States Congress after the Women’s World Cup. “The USSF has repeatedly admitted that it does not pay the women equally and that it does not believe the women even deserve to be paid equally,” Levinson said in a statement. “This is why they use words like ‘fair’ and ‘equitable,’ not ‘equal,’ in describing pay.”The numbers the USSF uses are utterly false, which, among other things, inappropriately include the NWSL salaries of the players to inflate the women’s players’ compensation. Any apples-to-apples comparison shows that the men earn far more than the women.” Megan Rapinoe writing book, wants to ‘inspire people to find what they can do’ USWNT’s Alex Morgan planning to launch own media company The letter states the federation pays members of the women’s team a $100,000 base salary and $67,500-$72,500 annually to play in the NWSL. They can also earn bonuses for playing in national-team games, though U.S. Soccer didn’t reveal the financial breakdown for the men’s bonus structure.Cordeiro notes in the letter that the totals don’t include money received by U.S. Soccer from FIFA for World Cup bonuses. If those numbers were taken into account, the men earned $41 million throughout that time period. The women, on the other hand, earned $39.7 million. For comparison: From 2010-2018, the men reached the round of 16 in 2010 and 2014, but failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. The women finished second in the 2011 tournament, and won in 2015. The letter comes as the debate around equal pay continues to grow after the USWNT won its fourth World Cup championship in France earlier this month. Twenty-eight members of the women’s national team filed a lawsuit over pay disparity against U.S. Soccer in the months leading up to the tournament, and agreed to settle the suit in mediation once the team returned to the United States. last_img read more

Coutinho hits hat-trick as Bayern rout Werder Bremen

admin no comments

first_img0Shares0000Philippe Coutinho walks off with the match ball after his hat-trick against Werder Bremen © AFP / Christof STACHEBERLIN, Germany, Dec 14 – Philippe Coutinho scored a hat-trick as Bayern Munich signalled their return to form with a 6-1 thrashing of Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga on Saturday. The Barcelona loanee was everywhere for Munich at the Allianz Arena, chalking up two assists in addition to his three goals as Bayern pulled to within four points of leaders Borussia Moenchengladbach. After Bremen’s Milot Rashica opened the scoring in the 24th minute for the visitors, it appeared it could be another long afternoon for the champions, who had lost their previous two games in the Bundesliga. Two goals in three minutes at the end of the first half however turned the game on its head, with Coutinho and Robert Lewandowski both scoring to fire Bayern into a 2-1 lead.Bayern ran riot after the break, adding four more goals – including two more for Coutinho, one more for Lewandowski and a goal for Thomas Mueller. Coutinho’s second, a brilliant chip over keeper Jiri Pavlenka, came right out of the Brazilian trickster’s top drawer.Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund continued their superb recent form, winning 4-0 away at Mainz to move two points behind Gladbach.Marco Reus scored his first away goal of the season with a stunning volley from the edge of the box, before Jadon Sancho, Thorgan Hazard and Nico Schulz all scored in the second half.Sancho has now scored in six games in a row for Dortmund, while Schulz’s goal was his first in Dortmund colours. In Berlin, Hertha registered their first win under former German national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann, winning 1-0 over a disappointing Freiburg. A goal from Vladimir Darida in the 53rd minute was enough to see Berlin claim the three points.Struggling Cologne picked up a vital three points at home against nine-man Bayer Leverkusen to take them off the bottom of the table. Leverkusen lost Aleksandar Dragovic and Leon Bailey to red cards in a 15-minute period in the second half and were unable to hold on as Cologne won 2-0.Union Berlin’s recent run of victories came to an end following a 1-1 draw against lowly Paderborn. Union, who had won four of their last five before travelling to Paderborn, started well, scoring through Marcus Ingvartsen in the seventh minute, before Paderborn equalised via Kai Proger in the 33rd.RB Leipzig have the chance to go top in Saturday’s late game when they take on Fortuna Duesseldorf. Gladbach are in action away to Wolfsburg on Sunday.0Shares0000(Visited 5 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more
