The Hart High School board finally put to rest the overcrowding issue at West Ranch High School by opting to send incoming freshman classes for the next four years to two area high schools. Voting 4-1 Wednesday, the Hart Union High School District Board decided that beginning in the fall of 2007, Castaic-area freshmen will attend Valencia High School. Beginning in 2009, Castaic-area freshmen will attend West Branch High School. The incoming students at both schools will remain there until graduation. The temporary plan would alleviate the current overcrowding at West Branch High with a more permanent solution coming in 2010, when Castaic High School is scheduled to open. Despite Wednesday’s ruling, freshmen students who have older siblings at West Ranch High will still be allowed to enroll at the high school. Speaking to a packed house inside the Hart High School auditorium the board explained how difficult the decision was. “I have been spinning, conflicted, nauseous, trying to look for a solution that doesn’t impact student learning,” said Patricia Hanrion, Hart board president. Prior to the meeting, parent groups from Castaic to Stevenson’s Ranch furiously called and sent e-mails to the district in the hopes of having their individual messages heard. While some disagreed on whether students should be transferred, no one wanted it to be their child. Castaic resident Flo Lawrence was not happy with the board’s decision. “We just got hosed,” he said. In making its decision, the board turned down the district’s alternative proposal to deal with overcrowding by sending West Branch High School students across the street to Rancho Pico Junior High School for some classes. “I don’t believe high schoolers belong on the same campus as Junior High students,” said Steven Sturgeon, Hart board member. connie.llanos@dailynews.com (661) 257-5254last_img read more
