first_imgA Liberian man, who collapsed while watching Arsenal losing to Chelsea on Saturday afternoon, was pronounced dead by doctors after he was rushed to a local clinic in Monrovia.According to eyewitnesses, shortly after the game ended in favor of Chelsea with 2 over Arsenal, the elderly man, only identified as Fofana, fell to the ground.“Fofana apparently had a heart attack when the final whistle sounded,” an eyewitness told this newspaper, following the stampede that ensued after the match, at a video club on Benson and Lynch Street in Central Monrovia. The deceased, a resident of Clara Town, was a professional tailor, who worked as president of the Fofana Tailoring Shop on Benson Street, neighbors said.Paramedics, who arrived at the video club around 2p.m. and took the man to the clinic, confirmed his death. An eyewitness, who claimed to be a Chelsea fan, said Mr. Fofana’s death was a tragedy, because he was a loyal member of Arsenal Club. It was also reported that a van conveying Mr. Fofana’s body to a local mosque was reportedly involved in a crash on Broad Street, Crown Hill.Meanwhile, in keeping with the Moslem tradition, the remains of Fofana were reportedly buried yesterday morning. On the game itself Coach Jose Mourinho was full of praise for his players, following Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Arsenal at Stamford Bridge Saturday. The Blues scored twice in the second half, through Kurt Zouma and Eden Hazard, to secure a much-needed three points, and it was no more than the team deserved having been much the better side. The visitors had both Gabriel and Santi Cazorla sent off, but Mourinho preferred to focus on the qualities of his own side.“It was a very good performance, a deserved victory, I’m happy with the performance and points,” Jose Mourinho, Chelsea’s Manager said after the match.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgTRANSITION YEAR students at one Co Donegal school have come up with a very unique and clever way of raising awareness about the fate of Syrian’s refugees.Class Fiachra at Loreto Letterkenny want participants in this Sunday’s North West 10k to ‘donate their steps’ – and it won’t cost a cent! The idea is that runners and walkers just sign up to donate their steps when they register for the 10K this week. It’s as simple as that. “We are a development education class in Transition Year Loreto Convent Letterkenny,” said the girls.“Our project is called Steps 4 Syria. Our aim is to raise awareness of the Syrian refugee crisis. We hope to educate people on this topic. More than 12 million Syrians have fled their country because they are being persecuted due to civil war. Their homes are being destroyed. They have nothing left. They are no longer safe in their own country. 20,000 Syrians have died at sea trying to reach safety,” they explained.“This is the equivalent of the population of Letterkenny. Millions have fled to neighbouring countries and are now trying to reach Europe in search of a better life for their families.“As a class we have joined with the North West 10k committee. We are asking you to donate your steps to our project. It takes 5,000 km for a Syrian refugee to walk from Damascus, the capital city of Syria, to Dublin. We need a minimum of 500 people to donate their distance so we can reach our target of 5,000 km. We are not asking for any money, we are simply asking you to donate your steps.” The North West 10k in association with Donegal Daily and Brian McCormick Sports, will take place this Sunday at 2pm.Pre-registration will take place in Letterkenny community centre at 5 p.m to 6:30 p.m from tomorrow Wednesday 27th April to Friday 29th April. So when you are registering for the walk/run simply sign up with the Loreto girls to donate your 10k.You can like the Facebook page at Steps 4 Syria, follow on Twitter steps4syria and follow  on Instagram steps4syria. LORETO LETTERKENNY TY STUDENTS URGE NW10K RUNNERS TO STEP-4-SYRIA was last modified: April 26th, 2016 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:donegalfundraiserletterkennyLoretoNorth West 10kSteps 4 SyriaTYlast_img read more
